Today is the final day of my COM 102 class. It is time to put books away and start enjoying the summer break. I am not a big fan of writing classes, but surprisingly this class did not appear to be much of punishment. Seventeen weeks flew by very fast and I know that I have learned and improved my English language skills.

I think that my performance was really good this semester and I am hoping that I have earned an A. According to my pretty good essay scores, I have improved in almost all areas of the writing process and even without much editing or reviewing them I did fine. Sometimes, it was really hard for me to finish the assignment because I am not what you call a motivated person. I often waited till the last minute to turn in an assignment and that has not always paid off. The hardest thing was to start, but once I got going with it, writing came pretty easy to me; I often finished my assignments in just a couple of hours and I was proud of my work.

The most interesting thing that I learned during this semester was creating the connections among texts discussed and other texts. We did it a lot in this class and every article that we read or every essay that we wrote was connected in some way or another. Even at the end of the semester we recalled some work that we did in the beginning to help us understand the subject better. I also like the “Annotated Bibliography” assignment because it is a really complicated process and knowing it could be useful for my later college years.

The most exciting thing about this class is the use of digital texts. I think that the teacher tried to reach us, his students, in a way that would appeal to us. We are a generation of people that spends most of their time in front of some kind of device with electronic data. This idea was really good. I love that we could post our homework to blog and not deal with the stupid printers that do not work most of the time or run out of ink at the very time that you need it. In my opinion digital texts are the future of learning because pretty soon we will all be using electronic devices like I-pads in class; they will replace the traditional pen and a notebook. The study of digital texts was really fun and feels that we have accomplished the main subjects and objectives of it from this course.

I do not regret taking this course because it was probably one of my more relaxing and fun classes. For now, I am done with my English requirements for my field of study and I do not know if I will be taking more; maybe I will take one for fun. Whatever I will do, I know that I will be prepared and ready for whatever the English language throws at me. I am happy to share my work with you but sadly this is a last blog entry for from my COM 102 class. Thank you for a wonderful semester and the education that I will carry with me forever.

Elevator Chat about technology trends brought up some interesting topics and discussions in the classroom. All of the students had interesting things to say and did very well in educating the classroom. During the two day I heard a lot of presentation and thanks to the scorecard I got to keep track of them. There has been a lot of presentation about everyday things like iPhones and iPods but a lot of the students did creative presentations about topics that I did not care to research before like wind farms or teens using internet for health purposes. The presentations were very fun because they gave us an opportunity to try a different style of learning; learning about important matters through the word of mouth.

The presentation for me seemed a little stressful at first but after I got to share it with the class, it felt really good. Not only I got to talk to my classmates about my technology trend paper, but I learned a few things and observed a trend myself. After hearing all of the elevator chats, I could probably write an essay about most of the COM 102 students writing technology trend papers about Apple products. Almost half of the students did their presentations on iPads, iPods, or iPhone and its apps. It appears that these devices produce big profits in the portable technology market. I think that most of the people who wrote about them probably also own them. The younger generations are starting a trend of mobile technology as the use for everything. We are really dependent on it and we need it to perform simple tasks. Overall, I really liked the Elevator Chat assignment because as a class we are good with the class discussions and in the future, it could prove to be an important asset for our careers.

A trend is a weird thing; I always think why they even exist. Is it not better to be original and follow your own rules or guidelines? I guess it is human nature that we have to have the hottest thing that everyone else is buying. Throughout history, there has been many trends that our society went to. The biggest one that could be observed on daily basis is the way we dress; styles and preferences change every decade. There has also been many trends in technology, but as we all know, technology is an exponentially growing industry and I observed that the 21st century started some of the most influential trends, like iphones, ipads, and it also changed the way we look at video games.

Since the beginning of gaming some fifty years ago, video games have always been played the same way. You choose what you want to play, you turn it on, and then you grab a joystick with couple buttons on it; that is all to it. Whenever I played video games, it always came down to me being bored because all you did was sit on the couch, stare at the screen, and press appropriate buttons.

I think that this way to play has also contributed to the unhealthy lifestyle within children and teenagers. From personal experience I could tell you that they could play games for hours at the time; even six to eight hours. Instead of going outside and playing sports or exercise, they choose to play inside because “that game is awesome”. Video games are also a big cause of diminishing social activities within teenagers. I remember that back when I was living in Poland, there were always kids playing in the streets and I myself, never stayed inside; me and my friends always found something to do. These days, you never see anyone outside anymore. Even in the summer a lot of people choose to stay inside by themselves in their dark basement just trying to get to the next level. I am not saying that video games are bad; but the way we use to play them without any movement was horrible, until now.

In 2005 Nintendo introduced a revolutionary game console to the world; it is called Nintendo Wii (Ehrenberg). It was unlike anything we ever saw at the time and it changing the way we will play video games in the future. You may ask how? Well it is very simple, because it actually gets a player to physically interact with the game. Wii’s motion control technology allows it to do that. The Wii remote allows users to get up, move around the room and become part of the game. If you want your character on the screen to swing his sword, you move the remote and make swing it at the enemy. In a game of baseball, you hold the remote like a bat , and swing for the home run when you want and your virtual player will copy your moves. Nintendo has made a series of sports games that allow the user to feel like they are playing tennis, soccer, bowling, and almost any sport that you could imagine, all in the comfort of your living room.

This kind of gaming may sound appealing to anybody. It changes how we play video games for a better and more exciting way. Who does not want to control a game character through a series of moves? It may give you the illusion that you are literally in the game swinging a bat or a sword.

Another great invention of the Nintendo company is Wii Fit. It uses a balance board which is an addition to the console and acts kind of as a remote. This game is a huge hit as it is one of the best selling console video games in history, with over 22 million copies sold and counting (VGChatrz). I know, right? a video game that makes you exercise a hit? Surprisingly it was, maybe because it is like having a personal trainer, a nutritionist, and a doctor, all with a press of a button. I think it is mostly popular with the female community, especially among stay-at-home moms and insecure teenage girls. It could simply be just because no one has ever experienced something like that and everybody wants to try it to see what all of the buzz is about. The possibilities to motion controls are endless and I know that they will develop when other companies like Sony and Microsoft catch up to Nintendo.

Nintendo is really successful with their console simply because no one else offers a product like that. In the past it always used to be Microsoft or Sony at the top of the sales charts. Ever since the Wii came out, it has been the best selling video game console. According to Seeking Alpha, Nintendo sold 2.5 million units during the first six months and still up to January 2009 they were number one with total sales ( Ehrenberg). The magnificent sales are also probably due to the price of the unit. It is more then a hundred dollars less then its competitors and low price in most cases is a buying argument for many consumers.

I think that Wii has also targeted a new kind of audience, parents. Ever since the Wii came out, it has been flying of the shelves like crazy. In the beginning of the sales I remember it that it always used to be sold out because the demand for the product was so great. It happened because a new kind of audience got excited about the product, the parents. Parents always yell at their kids for playing too much video games, and sitting home all day. They think it is very unhealthy for a kid to stay in front of a TV, playing some pointless video games. But when Nintendo Wii came, they found a partial solution for this problem. Suddenly, every kid, instead of getting a normal gift for his or her birthday or Christmas, they got a Wii. Why? The answer is simple; parents have already coped that the young generation will always play games, so they would rather have their kids play games which involve physical activity. That way, their kids could play video games and at the same time exercise; it is a win-win situation. I think that Nintendo also integrated the whole family in the idea of gaming. Games are simple to use and for example like bowling, could be enjoyed by the entire family; since their motion controlled, your dad or mom could finally understand how to play video games.

Like with any other console over the years, there is always room for improvement. Wii has poor graphics and the motion control technology is not perfect although Nintendo introduced it with great success. That is where Sony and Microsoft come in. Shocked by the sales of the Wii, they too noticed that motion controls are the future of gaming. Both of those companies are working hard and developing their own game consoles with motion control technology.

Sony is working on Project Move. It will also use a controller similar to Wii but it will also include a camera which will enable the user to use his voice in the game. The graphics will be a great improvement over the Wii. As Sony‘s Peter Dille said: “Move is revolutionary and a step ahead of anything in the marketplace. We’d like to think this is the next generation of motion gaming”(Snider).

Microsoft on the other hand took a little bit different approach with their very own Project Natal. The games developer, Peter Molyneux said that “What designers and what this industry does with Natal will change the landscape of the games we play” (Snider). I totally believe him because unlike Nintendo or Sony’s consoles, Project Natal will not use any joysticks. The system’s camera will simply recognize the player in 3-dimensional format and transform their every move into the game they are playing. I cannot wait to experience games like that and I also think that it might very well be the next best thing in the video game industry.

As we know it, technology is growing exponentially and every year, we will be witnesses to some great discovery that will change our lives. Technology could be our friend if it is used in a good way. I think that motion control technology is one of those good things because it will eliminate the “couch potatoes” of our generation. It will also help us get healthier and even fit. I could say that I am a fan of technology and I am involved in many different trends, I think that trends will always exist because of the great improvement that are happening every day. We have better cars, better phones, better ipods and until the world ends human race will always pursue something new and better.

Since the cellular phone was invented, there was always a question whether it could potentially distract a person operating a vehicle. Scientists conducted many different studies on things that could impair a driver; from food and conversations with passengers to talking on the cell phone. Participants showed that all of those are plausible factors but cell phone distraction proved to be very dangerous.

When we entered the 21st century, a new dangerous method of communication while driving emerged. It is text messaging, or texting, which consists of writing the message on the cell phone’s keys and sending it to a receiver, they can then read it and reply, and a conversation develops between the two. “According to a survey conducted by CTIA in 2005, there were 81 billion text messages sent in the United States; however, in 2008, the number of send text messages exceeded 1 trillion” (Drews). It is very good evidence for the rapid development technology in communication

In the early studies scientists believed that although perceived otherwise, text messaging could be safer then a phone conversation because it could be controlled by the user; the user could reply to a message during a period of driving which does not require a lot of focus, a phone conversation on the other hand, is going on no matter what is the driving setting. The current studies are conducted in a safe environment involving driving simulators, therefore scientists could collect a more accurate data.

In this study participants consisted of 20 males and 20 females from with the average age of 21 years, and average driving experience of 4.5 years (Drews). Researchers used a driving simulator called PatrolSim, made by L3 Communications. It provided the participants with normal driving conditions that they might have encountered while driving in real life. The group was allowed to use their own cellular devices to get more accurate results. Each person was tested during normal driving and driving while text messaging for comparison; scientists sent them messages randomly and they had to reply to them and the results of the exercise were later analized.

Braking was impaired while dual-tasking. Average brake onset time for a single task was 881 miliseconds, and for dual task 1077 miliseconds (Drews). The following distance proved that while dual-tasking, participants tended to stay a little more back to allow themselves for longer reaction time. Lane maintenance was also impaired greatly by almost doubling, when multitasking. There were seven crashes and six of them occurred while the participants were dual-tasking; that is about 86% which is a very big difference. (Drews)

It is clear from the experiment that texting while driving is very dangerous. It is mainly due to the reaction times which increased in more concentrated forms even by 35% to 45% when participants were text messaging and operating the vehicle (Drews). It is much harder to drive while text messaging when compared to a phone conversation while driving. Therefore, making it a higher risk to experience a collision. Results from this study prove that when text messaging in overall impairs driver’s performance substantially, and even more when dual-tasking a lot and irresponsibly.

The results of this study did not really surprise me because I am well aware of the dangers that come from text messaging while driving. In the recent years, there has been many accidents and many lives lost due to that kind of technology. If you think about it, if it was not invented none of this would happen. My biggest question is if text messaging is a good invention or a bad one? I think it was only invented because we live in a world where people are afraid of interaction by being, or talking to another person. Text messaging is a good way to avoid those long and pointless phone conversations.

What really surprised me in this experiment was that the following distance for dual-tasking people was 34.3 meters, and for single-tasking 29.1 meters (Drews). The participants, without realizing it, saved more distance between the cars to provide more reaction time for themselves. It is fascinating how human brain takes actions to protect itself. All of the other results were pretty similar to what I predicted. Even before reading this article I assumed that because I admit that I do text message while driving and if you want to do it successfully, you have to do it smartly. I only text when I know that I have time and space to do it. It is worth waiting to reply to that one text message because who knows?, someday it could save your life.

I am not a big fan of mobile technology. I do use it, but there are limits to everything. Soon, the people in the streets will be bumping into each other without even noticing it because everybody is on their iphones, ipods, smart phones, and other gadgets. Technology in communication leads to only one thing and Tucker mentioned it in his article “Hooked Up or Just Hooked”, one day nobody will even leave their own room. They will live virtual lives and visit their social networking sites, and if I think about it, it kind of makes me sad because we were not created to live alone in this world; Like every other animal on this planet we are meant to stick together.

Most of the activities done by teenagers involve the use of technology. In fact, an average teenagers spends about 4 hours a day playing around with some type of technological system. Such a progression only motivates the growth and expansion of technology but some authors think that it could be harmful to a teenager. These days, most of the teenagers are really advanced with computers and mobile devices, and social networking sites, such as Facebook, are a regular, everyday part of their lives; often, they cause a great amount of stress due to social acceptance and peer pressure. Parents often punish their children by taking away their electrical devices and it could also be said that pretty soon you will be able to punish kids by forcing them to go outside.

I think that most of this article is true because technology is also a big part of my life and I can not really imagine living without it. I could maybe be without it for a couple of days, but any more than that would probably make me go crazy. On the other hand, sometimes I hate being involved in Facebook, texting, and other activities that basically waste a great amount of my time; most of the time, they only account for problems because some people just care to much about what is going on in their “virtual life”. We have to teach the younger generations that technology is not everything but the real human values are supposed to lead us to greatness, make our lives easier and full of joy.

Television is a big part of today’s society. Almost every household in United States has at least one TV but most have even more. While living in the 21st century, it is hard to imagine that in the past there was no television at all. It seems as our lives would be boring and humor-deprived. Personally, I do not really watch that much of it, just because I can watch any show or a movie that I want on the Internet; it is very easy and lets me pick my own time to watch something. I think that comedy shows are the ones that are winning American hearts now, because the society just wants to laugh a little and forget about the everyday problems. TV could provide family entertainment, and it is probably the cheapest way to spend time, which sounds reasonable due to the recessing economy that United States and its citizens are experiencing now. I like to watch funny stuff and I think that “Family Guy” is a good example of modern-day humor. It is one of the most popular TV Shows and is aired on FOX channel.

“Family Guy” is a tale of a typical American family living in the suburbs of Rhode Island, in the city called Quahog. They encounter everyday problems and try to cope with them which such ways that may seem really stupid but at the same time very funny to us. The Griffin family consists of three children: Meg, Chris, and Stewie, a talking dog, Brian, a loving housewife, Lois, and of course the head of the family Peter Griffin. Each of these characters has very unique qualities to them but I definitely think that Peter is the funniest character on the show. Some of the things that he does are so stupid, controversial, and rude, that they make him an interesting individual to follow.

I think that it is every mans’ dream to be like Peter Griffin. I wish that my life could be so careless and reckless but at the same time, not involving any consequences. That is a life of a cartoon character and I know that it is almost impossible to replicate something like that in real life.

My life is totally different than Peters. Although I am only in college still, I know that I could never be like him, even if a really wanted too. I am a man of principle and I do whatever I have to, to succeed; I just care to much to let something go. I am often stressed out about the deadlines and it really bothers me that I just cannot let go and forget about all of the problems. Sometimes I wish that I could be like a cartoon because they have nothing to worry about; no deadlines no problems, they just do whatever their creator tells them to.

I think that the biggest difference between me and Peter is the amount of intelligence that each of us possesses. I think I could call myself smart because I never had problems in school and I am not bad at solving problems. I think that every other trait of a person is dependent on how smart they are. After watching “Family Guy” you would not think that Peter Griffin is a smart man; you would probably call him stupid or dumb but I think that is what makes him a funny character. It was actually implied on the show a couple of times, that he could probably be pronounced legally retarded. On the latest episode, after thinking that the world was going to end, Peter told his kids that he hates them and unluckily for him the world ending was just an April Fools prank made up by a local television station. The reason for hating them was that they were boring. As he explained, they never got into trouble, never been kidnapped, and did not get involved in other life threatening activities. That is one good example of the immature and dumb stuff that Griffin does regularly on daily basis. I, on the other hand, try to avoid creating situations like that because it would be embarrassing and would probably cause me a great amount of problems.

Unlike anyone in this world, Peter does not know what embarrassment or shame is. His actions are guided based purely on his wants and needs. He does not care what anybody thinks about him. I really like that about him because it is hard to live in today’s society and avoid unnecessary judgment. I can admit that I never did some things just because my peers thought that it was stupid or childish. It is really important to retain your own identity and do whatever makes YOU happy.

The most obvious difference that could be distinguished between us is probably the case of a best friend. Peters’ best friend is a dog; but it is not an ordinary dog. His name is Brian and he talks and behaves like any other human being. Peter and Brian have their differences and arguments but in the end their friendship overpowers all of that. They often do pranks to each other and have a good time. Although I do not have a dog best friend I do have couple best friends. Just like the Griffins, we fight sometimes but more importantly we connect and have good times together. Whether it is going to a party, movies, or just hanging out, I could always count on them to help me when I am in need. That is what having friends is all about. Just like Peter and his friends in “Family Guy” we even have a few beers together.

Peter is a strange man but I believe that deep down family is the most important for him and just like me, he would not survive without them. He makes fun of them a lot of times but at the end of the day they make-up because that is what families do and mine is not any different.

I think Lois, Peters wife, is what keeps their family together. She is the every-man’s dream woman. She does everything in the house, including taking care of Peter’s messes, and even though sometimes she complains, she never gives up on her family. Peter insults her and lets her down a lot of times but they love each other and that is more than enough to keep them together. But now lets go back to the real world. I have a girlfriend and like every other guy I am a little afraid of her. If I get in trouble or do something stupid, I hear yelling or words of disappointment and other stuff that makes me feel miserable. Most of the time though we have a good time and I really love her. That makes us forget about all of the bad stuff and retain only the good memories in our minds.

You could say that Peter Griffin is at times a loving husband but sometimes he gets into and impression that he is a big kid. I guess that all of us have a kid inside of them but most of the time we are too afraid to unleash it and just be ourselves. I try my best to be good but also a fun person to be around. Maybe I do not do all of the crazy stuff that Peter does but it does not matter because at the end of the day I am proud of what I have accomplished and just like him, I love my family, my girlfriend, and my friends and that is all I need to be satisfied with my life.

In this article, Thomas Massaro expresses his feelings about mobile technology and how it affects human behavior. It could create great damage like when a man was texting while operating heavy machinery or it could interrupt simple celebration of your favorite baseball team winning. Today, most of the society is too busy, with their ipods or smart phones, to notice the natural beauties of the environment and society we live in. There is much less interaction between people than there used to be before mobile technology. It is a good excuse to avoid beggars or others that we do not like. Numerous attempts are made to create awareness of this problem but the choice to unplug lies within the users.

I totally agree with that article. Nowadays, wherever you go, you could see someone texting, surfing the web, or listening to music. People are starting to be less social and isolate themselves from the real world by turning on their gadgets. It has come to the point that mobile technology has become a problem; these days, even texting could ruin your life. People are arguing over the phone, couples are breaking-up, it seems that it could be a substitute for everything. Another popular thing among teens is “sexting”; it involves people sending nude picture messages to each other. It is creating a lot of drama, especially in high schools. So far, the technology has been useful to us but recently it progresses into a problem. I think that we, as users, have to take action ourselves and use it responsibly and to our advantage.

The Office is an American show which is based on a popular hit, of the same name, in Great Britain. It is a combination of reality TV and a Sitcom; in other words, it is scripted and performed by professional actors but with a taste of amateurish and real life camera action. The characters in the show are very cynical and could even be perceived as stupid in some situations. The whole idea of a show is video-taping everything that goes on in an office of Dunder Mifflin paper company. The Office, as described by the author of this article, is a “mockumentary” or ,in other words, a fake documentary. Some aspects of reality TV such as employee interviews, and close-ups on people’s reactions, are clearly visible throughout the series. This type of new media is very appealing to the audience because everybody likes the idea of “real” TV; as viewers, we have a desire to watch some form of surveillance or even be a part of one, just like a lot of people are doing recently. This article also points out memorable moments on the show that make The Office a great show to watch. It is a clever show that in some degree could even be educational to the viewers.

I am a regular watcher of The Office and I think that the show is great. There is something about it that makes me want more. The humor on the show is very good; most of the times it could be described as “smart” humor. I especially love the character of Michael Scott. He could be some egoistic and emotional, and also changes his mind like a hundred times a day. I do not really know why but people seem to really like Reality TV; yet, it is quickly overtaking the television market. Personally, I like some shows but most of the ones that are aired on MTV are plainly pointless and stupid. Something like The Office is a very intelligent use of the reality TV profile for standard programming. It still appeals to the audience as a surveillance show but with a creative, smart, and funny fashion that could also educate people about some basic ideas of human reasoning and behavior.

As receivers, humans gather many different types of information on a daily basis, through many different means of media. People do it when they watch TV, listen to the radio, surf the web, or even talk to other people. Current events are a big part of life and to stay on top of them, one has to find a way to research them efficiently. One way to access news is through Internet. Since the start of World Wide Web internet has come a long way and expanded beyond expectations. Just like TV did in the 1960s, Internet has opened a brand new window to the world’s infinite information.

During 2000’s a lot of companies started transmitting information through blogs. Blog is a contraction of two words, web and log; it is a website maintained by one or more people through which they share information and comment on it. Blogs are very popular but not always reliable. There are companies out there such as Gawker Media, which is a reliable source of news that possesses a series of blogs concentrated on various topics.

Gawker was the company’s first blog, started in 2002 (nplusonemag.com). It was founded by Nick Denton and launched by an internet entrepreneur Professor Henry Higgins. Elizabeth Spiers was the first writer hired; she had a little bit of experience from writing her own blog about finances. At first, Gawker was not a news medium and Spiers wrote articles about different aspects of life in New York. She was originally from a small town and found it exciting to write about Manhattan. Later in the year, after attending media parties and miscellaneous events Spiers decided to start creating Gawker as a media blog. She started covering celebrity lives and events and posting many different types of information that could interest the readers. Website Gawker.com officially launched in December of 2002 and started getting more attention. By May of 2003 the site was already getting about 500,000 views per month and it showed a lot of potential for rapid growth (noneplusmag.com). Later that year, Elizabeth Spiers left the company to pursue a career in another medium. It was a big risk for Gawker because over the years she attracted many readers, and it was unknown if they were going to remain loyal to the website or the writer. It was hard to replace Spiers but the new writer, Choire Sicha, did not disappoint; his writing was sincere and true and kept the company on the right track. He was quickly promoted and became an important asset to the company. The site was not making much money for the founder but the number of users grew steadily. In the meantime, Denton kept on expanding the content of Gawker Media by creating new blogs like: Gizmodo, a website about gadgets, Fleshbot about pornography, and also other informational websites like Defamer, Wonkette, and Kinja. After Sicha was promoted to a higher rank, Denton hired a new writer, Jessica Coen. She was the youngest writer yet and edited the blog for two years; that was twice as much than the previous staff members. Her writing was very controversial and mean, because she did not hold back on anything when trying to expose the ugly truth. The ratings of Gawker continued to rise although experienced some bumps in ratings along the way. The editors kept changing throughout the years but the style of the website stayed relatively the same. Only one person was irreplaceable. Nick Denton created the company from scratch and stuck with it during the bad times, and today he owns one of the most successful Internet mediums.

Currently, Gawker Media owns and operates eight blogs, based in the United States. Throughout the years the company studied the market and created web logs that try to satisfy the informational needs of a wide variety of consumers. Readers could access all of the content by simply navigating through a series of lucid websites. They still operate their original blog, Gawker, which mainly focuses on covering news and gossips about celebrities, their lives, and scandals. Deadspin posts the latest information from the world of sports; MLB, NFL, NBA, it is all there as well as coverage of personal lives of sports stars. Kotaku appeals to the gaming community. If you want to know more about video games, that is the place to go. Every woman should visit Jezebel, a blog that helps with tips on fashion and style. The io9 blog was created with all of those science fiction fanatics in mind; visit it to explore the worlds of Extra Terrestrial. Jalopnik brings all of the motorsports together. It gives the audience a chance to explore more about the automotive world as well as it lets them share their own ideas with other enthusiasts. Gizmodo presents the Gadget geeks with the latest news in the technological world and help them choose the best gadget for a given job. Lifehacker is a blog which could improve one’s computing abilities. Editors of it explain how to use a computer efficiently and even provide software that could help to achieve it. According to Alexa.com, Gizmodo.com is Gawker Media’s most visited website. Up to date, its traffic ranks at spot 561 out of millions of registered websites (Alexa.com). It is a great success for Nick Denton which brings him nice revenue. All of the blogs are basically created in a similar format, with different information. Using those mediums to gather news could be very efficient, especially with constant access to the World Wide Web.

The future for Gawker Media is really bright. Internet is rapidly growing and pretty soon it is going to be the number one medium for information, passing the Television in the standings. As Internet will be accessible in more areas of the world the amount of users will increase and the potential users will be visiting websites like gawker.com, making it more and more popular. It is just a natural cause of events. First, the radio was the main medium to the world, and then it was replaced with television, and now in the 21st Century Internet will finally get its five minutes before being replaced with some new radical invention. With that in mind, there is no way that online media will fail; especially Gawker Media because that company is very revolutionary and covers all aspects of news. It also appeals to many different demographics with the eight blogs that they update almost every minute, 24 hours a day.

Online web log is a fairly new concept and history has proved that people love new things. Every time that some new invention is released, everybody want to get their hands on it. Internet is growing rapidly, and pretty soon humanity will probably be able to literally do anything without getting away from the computer screens. A new era has already begun, the era of the Internet and the World Wide Web.

“Download: The True Story of the Internet” is a documentary about how Internet has recently changed the world and the way we communicate. When World Wide Web was invented it was not predicted to be the success it is today. When Internet first started a lot of opportunities aroused. Young people understood how it would be big someday and immediately took charge. One of the first programs that hit the users hard was Napster. It was a music sharing program which allowed anyone to get free music. During those times, most of the Internet was used just for that, but later it would be judged as illegal and had to shot down. It did not stop anything though because it is still easy to download virtually anything for free. Social networking recently, became big and websites like “Myspace” and “Facebook” are worth millions now. Today, anyone could create a simple website like a blog and share their thoughts with the entire world in just seconds.

“JFK: Breaking the News” was an interesting movie to watch because personally I have never seen the assassination on TV or on the Internet. The television became popular just as President Kennedy emerged. He looked good on a TV screen and sounded sincere. The shooting was the first one ever televised live because the event in Dallas, Texas was broadcasted on national TV. At the time the newspapers were the main medium of news for American citizens, but after the broadcast of the JFK assassination people became well aware of televised information sharing. At the time the news were very real and there was no editing, and nothing was planned. On the video we could see that newsmen are smoking, talking on the phone, and walking around the newsroom. The story was covered in real-time, unlike with the newspapers; they just could not keep up with the news stream. That is why everybody turned to television for answers. News were not as well researched as in newspapers and sometimes even wrong, but broadcasters quickly corrected them and moved on. The great coverage of the JFK assassination made TV great and turned millions of American heads towards the screens and till this day it remains.

I think that both movies are talking about the similar change, but with different mediums in exchanging information. In the 60s it was a transition from Newspapers to Televisions, and in 2000s from Television to Internet. I think these changes happen because people are always looking for something new, something better. Now TV news are not enough, people do not want to wait everyday for a certain hour to watch the day’s events. Internet allows them to look up the news every second of the day. I think though that with internet we kind of came back to the newspaper style of news. For some time, the TV was the main source for information, but now Internet is just like a newspaper published online, is it not? People no longer watch news, they read them once again, and often from newspaper sources. It is good for us but unfortunately it is bad for newspapers because they are not making any money from the printed copies; this caused for many bankrupt companies recently.
